New Years date all the way to the Mesopotamian tribe in Iraq where they believed on their calender that brought about new life and starting over. The Mesopotamian believed that every 12 months a new year had begun and that tradition has carried on. They decided on January because that was when season began to turn turn marking the 6 month period. Romans also had some work in this holiday dedicating this holiday to the God Janus who opened up gates and doorways which means new beginnings. They too declared January as the first month of the New Year also dedicating the month to Julius Caesar to honor his death.
New Years Day is always on January 1st and it celebrates the beginning of a new year and is also celebrated as a national holiday. In New York City, New Years is celebrated by the ball drop in Times Square where music, drinking, eating, and well kissing. What better way to start off the New Year with a big smooch to your wife, girlfriend, or friend. New Years is filled with mostly drinking and music because the combo of two is the best to have fun and fun is always good. Many people also start making resolutions where they decide to start something new for the new year either eating healthy quitting ciggaretts, drinking, eating junk food or even going to the gym.
